Karin, as always a great article. I wonder if you can elaborate more on "DHA-PC." Is this a supplement form or just available in whole seafood? Maybe you have covered this topic elsewhere and I just haven't found it. My omega3 level is ok, but not great in spite of eating quite a bit of seafood. I keep getting conflicting articles/opinions about the best way and amount to supplement. Including one recent article that said apoe4 brains can't assimilate dha, so just take epa! Thanks in advance. Barry
ugh, I was afraid you'd refer to that product. I'm not sure which is worse, the price or the fact that we'd need to take 30 pills a day to get a gram of DHA. Am I missing something here? Seems like a good idea with bad execution by the manufacturer.
Yes, it’s expensive, but you can also skip it entirely if you’re eating sardines or mackerel daily, which are rich in highly bioavailable DHA. I use the supplements on days when I haven’t had fatty fish, or when I’m out of my normal routine and traveling. I’m in Europe right now, spending a few days in Paris, and brought the DHA capsules just in case. Turns out almost every other restaurant here serves sardines - often right in the tin with bread on the side.
I agree that Lyso-DHA is priced out of reach for many people. Sardines, on the other hand, are inexpensive and one of the most nutrient-dense foods we can eat - especially for APOE4s. And if sardines aren’t your thing, you can make delicious patties that completely mask the flavor.
And there’s been upsetting but groundbreaking new research out of Canada (Andriambelo et al) this year showing that LPC-DHA got trapped in E4 mice’s choroid plexus, meaning yes it got thru the BBB, but no it did. It deposit into the cortex (E3 mice did show the deposit into cortex)
Hey Karin, where can I find the recipe for the patties that mask the flavor… I need this! Ha ha! I have had sardines sitting on my counter staring at me through the clear tin top and I just can’t bring myself to open and eat them…
Hi Cindy, it's very simple... I actually like sardines and have no issue eating them - but my husband isn't a fan. There are lots of different recipes you will find online and they all seem to mask the taste. I add an egg, chopped parsley, a bit of dijon mustard, a bit of paprika, a dash of lemon, a splash of Worcestershire and a small amount of gluten free breadcrumbs to bind. Pop into the oven at temp (420) for 15-20 minutes. Enjoy. Quick and easy protein! If you haven’t tried Atlantic Mackerel, it has higher DHA than sardines and more meaty (less fishy). Try it, you might like it! 😉
Well done Karin excellent work. There was a very interesting 2012? published report on an experiment with ALS where 300mg rectally to avoid impacts on liver and first pass effects (no typo re dose) was given daily for 2 years. No significant sfx and all cases the oxidative stress sod1 dropped back to normal in a very high group. Not powered enough as a study (?5 participants)to detect life extension but no obvious downside - never followed up as no money for non patentable agent. Melatonin very unexplored. Also if no other option Lemborexant a dual orexin inhib agent on sale as sleeping agent reduced tau but only in Male rats studied - said to make sense by related area researchers ; see article ALZ forum. Red Light etc preferable but may be worth noting

Hi Barry - I order the DHA-PC here: https://www.fenixhealthscience.com/products/accentrate-omega-max?sca_ref=10033786.y9wI2cc2z2kZ&utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=nicholas-norwitz. and you can use "StayCurious" for 20% off. That's Nick Norwitz' discount code. Btw....even though I take the DHA-PC, I also eat high DHA fish almost daily. Sardines or Mackerel are my "go to".
